Ordering your next meal on Deliveroo whilst riding home in your Uber to your next Airbnb location? Welcome to the gig economy. Heads up, it’s nothing to do with music which was the mistake I made at first. In the UK, 4.7 million workers are already a part of it. It’s taking over, but what is it? Instead of getting a normal salary, employees get paid depending on how many gigs they carry out, like uber drop offs or Deliveroo deliveries.
Being able to roll out of bed when you want, work where you want, take 5 lunch breaks, no boss micromanaging you? Amazing. However, uncertain workloads, no guarantee of a steady pay and most of all, resisting the urge to take all them lunch breaks can be tricky. Especially if you have rent and bills to pay, savings accounts to pay into (yeah right) and debts to pay off (more like it).
So how do hiring managers and recruiters appeal to these candidates looking for a gig?
They live and breathe technology. So if your website is not available pronto on the latest smartphone then its just not going to work. Being available on all platforms, at all times whilst constantly adapting to the newest tech is a must.
Talent pools are growing and growing due to technology developments and increased flexibility. Recruiters no longer have to look in local areas and can massively expand their searches, meaning more candidates and more diverse talent. So, when you get a job in small town you and no one else has ever heard of, don’t panic.
If the dream candidate ends up being the devil candidate, it won’t be the end of the world. Having loads of readily available and skilled candidates, makes it so much easier when needing to replace someone quickly and keep your reputation intact.
Embrace the gig economy and it could be very beneficial to your business. Now enjoy your UberEATS.
